Getting started
Where do I find Tabfold after installing it?
Open a new tab — Tabfold replaces Chrome's new tab page and walks you through a short setup. The Tabfold toolbar button opens the side panel for the current window; you can switch it to open the Open Tabs page in Settings → General. If you don't see the button, click the puzzle-piece Extensions button and pin Tabfold.
Do I need an account?
No. Tabfold has no account system or cloud sync. Your data stays in the browser on this computer.
What's the difference between Resources, Sessions and History?
Resources are links you add yourself and organize into workspaces and groups.
Sessions are snapshots you save on purpose — a set of windows and tabs with a name.
History is an automatic local record of your normal browser windows, so you can review or return to an earlier state.
Can I get my original new tab page back?
Chrome lets only one extension control the new tab page. To go
back to Chrome's default page, turn off or remove Tabfold from
chrome://extensions. Export a backup first if you
want to keep your data.
Sessions & restore
What does a saved session include?
The normal windows you choose (the current window or all of them), their tab order, pinned tabs and Chrome tab groups. Incognito windows are never captured. Page contents, form data and logins are not saved — tabs reload from their URLs when restored.
Will restoring a session close my current tabs?
Not with Restore in new windows, which leaves your existing tabs alone. Replace current tabs rebuilds the current window instead, and asks you to confirm before anything closes. The restore preview shows which tabs are already open so you can skip them.
Some tabs can't be restored. Why?
Chrome doesn't allow extensions to open some addresses, such
as browser-internal chrome:// pages and local
files. Tabfold leaves those out and tells you in the preview
before anything opens.
I removed something by mistake. Can I get it back?
Removed resources and workspaces go to Trash, and you can restore them from there for 30 days. Right after a removal you can also use Undo from the notification. For browser state, open History, pick an earlier snapshot and preview it before restoring.
I closed a tab or window by accident.
Open Open tabs → Recently closed and choose Restore next to the tab or window. This uses Chrome's own recently closed list.
Backups & data
How do I back up my data?
Open the Data menu → Backups and export a backup. Chrome saves it like any other download. The backup is a readable JSON file of your Tabfold data, up to 64 MiB.
How do I move Tabfold to a new computer or profile?
Export a backup on the old device and copy the file over. Install Tabfold on the new one, open the Data menu → Backups → Review a backup and select the file. Tabfold validates it and shows a summary first; your data isn't replaced until you confirm, and you can cancel at that point.
Is my backup file private?
Tabfold never uploads it, but the file is not encrypted. It contains complete URLs, which can include sensitive values that some sites put in the address. Store and share it the way you would your browsing history.
What happens to my data if I uninstall?
Chrome deletes the extension's local data when it's uninstalled. Backup files you exported are not affected, so export one before uninstalling if you might come back.
Tabfold says my data needs attention. What do I do?
Open the Data health page. It shows what was checked and the safe next steps. If you're stuck, use Export diagnostics on that page and email the file to us.
Permissions & incognito
Tabfold never asks for access to read or change data on the websites you visit, and has no content scripts. You can review every permission in Settings → Permissions.
| Access | Type | How it works |
|---|---|---|
storage, unlimitedStorage,
tabs, tabGroups,
sessions, alarms,
sidePanel, favicon
|
Required | Granted at install. See the privacy policy for what each one is used for. |
Bookmarks (bookmarks) |
Optional | Requested only if you choose to import bookmarks during setup. Revoke it any time in Settings → Permissions or Chrome's extension settings; imported resources stay. |
| Incognito windows | Chrome-managed |
Off unless you turn on Allow in Incognito on
Tabfold's Details page in chrome://extensions.
When allowed, incognito windows may appear in the live Open
Tabs view, but automatic History and saved sessions leave
them out.
|
When you install Tabfold, Chrome may describe the
sessions permission as “Read your browsing history on
all your signed-in devices”. Tabfold uses it only for the Recently
closed list and its restore action.
