Data Tabfold handles
Tabfold handles the minimum data needed for its visible features:
- Browser tab metadata, including tab titles, complete URLs (including query strings and fragments), window and tab-group structure, ordering, pinned state, recently closed tab and window records, and related Chrome-provided identifiers.
- Content that you create in Tabfold, including workspace names, resource titles and URLs, saved-session names and descriptions, and local recovery records.
- Local preferences and reliability metadata, including language, appearance, default behavior, data-health markers, history snapshots, and Trash recovery state.
- Backup files that you explicitly export or import. A backup can contain the local Tabfold records and URLs described above.
- Bookmark titles and URLs only when you explicitly choose bookmark import during setup and grant the optional Bookmarks permission.
Tabfold does not access cookie or credential storage, page bodies, form fields, personal communications, or Chrome's browsing-history database. It does not use host permissions or content scripts.
A site can place sensitive values, including identifiers or authentication-related values, in a URL query string or fragment. If present, Tabfold does not read those values from cookie or credential storage or parse them as separate credentials; it handles them only as part of the complete URL used by the local features described here. Exported backups can contain those complete URLs.
How the data is used
Tabfold uses this data only to provide user-facing features that you request, including:
- showing and organizing resources;
- showing currently open tabs and tab groups, activating a selected tab, copying selected URLs, and restoring a recently closed tab or window when you choose Restore;
- saving and reopening browser sessions;
- searching locally stored Tabfold content;
- creating local browser-state history and recovery records;
- exporting a local JSON backup and validating or restoring a backup file that you explicitly select; and
- importing browser bookmarks when you explicitly select that option.
Tabfold does not use this data for advertising, credit decisions, profiling, or any unrelated purpose.
Local storage and retention
Tabfold stores product data in Chrome extension-owned storage on your device, primarily IndexedDB and Chrome storage. The extension currently has no account system or cloud sync.
Local records remain available until they are removed by a visible product action, expire under a displayed recovery rule, or the extension's storage is removed. Uninstalling the extension through Chrome removes its extension-owned local storage. Tabfold does not claim that local data is encrypted at rest.
An exported backup is saved through Chrome's normal download behavior, either to the default download location or a location Chrome asks you to choose. It is a readable JSON file and is not encrypted by Tabfold. Portable backup files are limited to 64 MiB. Import validation happens locally before any replacement is confirmed.
Data transmission and sharing
The current production extension has no developer-operated backend, analytics SDK, telemetry service, advertising service, or network upload for Tabfold data. Tabfold does not sell, transfer, or share Tabfold data with the developer or third parties.
Normal browser navigation is outside this storage behavior: when you choose to open a resource or tab, Chrome navigates to the destination you selected. When you choose to copy URLs, the selected URLs are written to your device clipboard. Exporting or importing a backup uses a local browser file interaction and does not upload the file to Tabfold or a developer-operated service.
Tabfold does not load or execute remote code. Executable logic ships inside the installed extension package.
Permissions and incognito access
| Permission | Type | Used for |
|---|---|---|
storage, unlimitedStorage |
Required | Keep workspaces, sessions, history and recovery records in extension-owned local storage. |
tabs, tabGroups |
Required | Read tab titles, URLs and tab-group structure for Open Tabs, session save, search and restore. Page bodies are not read. |
sessions |
Required | Show Chrome's Recently closed list and restore only the tab or window you select. |
alarms |
Required | Local history flushing, recovery and maintenance after the service worker sleeps. |
sidePanel, favicon |
Required | The current-window side panel, and site icons from Chrome without access to every website. |
bookmarks |
Optional | Requested only from the setup action that starts bookmark import. |
Chrome may describe the sessions permission as “Read
your browsing history on all your signed-in devices”. Tabfold uses
it only for Recently closed and its restore action; it does not list
other devices' sessions or query Chrome's browsing-history database.
The Bookmarks permission is optional. You can revoke it from Tabfold's Permissions page or Chrome's extension settings. Revoking it does not delete resources that were already copied into a workspace.
Incognito access is controlled by Chrome, not by a Tabfold switch. If you allow incognito access in Chrome, incognito windows may appear in the live Open Tabs view. Automatic History and saved-session capture exclude incognito windows.
Your choices
You can:
- revoke optional bookmark access;
- manage incognito access in Chrome's extension settings;
- remove individual resources and restore eligible items from Trash;
- export a local backup, inspect an imported file before replacement, and cancel without changing stored data; and
- uninstall Tabfold to remove its extension-owned local storage.
Tabfold does not currently provide an account or hold a server-side copy that requires a separate deletion request.
